Time for another success story! I had a chat with Kyran, an Escapee that is now working at NaturalMotion as an Environment Artist.
What course did you study?
I studied the art of video games undergraduate course

What work are you most proud of working on and was/is your most notable achievement?
That’s a tough question, but It would probably have to be the final group project that I worked on whilst at Escape. ‘The Express’ was a very challenging project that tested everyone’s skills that we had developed over the years of studying, and it feels like it paid off in creating a very visually interesting and rich environment that I’m very proud to have been a part of.

If you had to sum up your time at Escape Studios in one word, what would it be and why?
‘Inspiring’
I found that being surrounded by classmates to be incredibly inspiring, there was always a terrific atmosphere built around the classes. Students would be actively engaging with each other and bouncing ideas off one another; it was inspiring every single day to be around and working alongside such talented people!

What lessons have you learnt during your time studying and your time working in Games?
I would say the biggest lesson I have learnt is that there is always more to learn! Always be hungry to expand your knowledge, and always be keen to improve. Seek feedback from peers, it’s absolutely invaluable to get someone else’s feedback and opinion.

What is your advice for those considering entering the industry?
There’s a lot of advice you could give! But to keep it short I would say working hard to get your art portfolio nicely polished is always great, but on top of that also keep in mind that soft skills go a long way too! How you work in a team, what you’re like as a person to work with, and so on.

What’s your favourite game and why?
My favourite game has got to be Dark souls 3, I feel like this game was so beautiful, rich in story telling and just so much fun to play. For me, it was such a thrilling experience to complete the game. I had to replay it several times afterwards!

Thanks to Kyran as well NaturalMotion for the talk!
